I took Roddie for his 8 year appointment recently and as usual, all looks good. No surprise, he's still pretty tall for his age, and he's holding steady at about an average weight - tall and skinny like his sister. This time, they also commented that on his current projectory, he will be at least 6'2" - no surprise given Matt and I.
As we went through the exam, Dr. D, his awesome pediatrician, recalled from his notes that Roddie's dream is to be a hockey player, or if that doesn't work out, a baseball player when he grows up. He asked what position he'd like to play, to which Roddie responded "Goalie". Dr. D paused for a second, and said "Wow, that's great, but you might be pretty tall to be an NHL Goalie - seems like those guys are down on their knees a lot" I don't mind this as the thought of kids hitting pucks at my baby is not one of my favorite things. So, I make a comment about "we'll have to look it up", to which Dr. D replies "Already on it!" Much to our surprise, the average height of an NHL Goalie is ....6'2"! One of the reasons Dr D is so awesome is that he had him totally engaged on this but also cautioned him to play all the positions for a while too.
Roddie of course is thrilled and sees this of validation of his plan. He has been heard at the bus stop, in the locker room... to anyone who will listen... telling his friends (with these exact words) "I am projected to be 6'2" and that's the average height of an NHL Goalie, and that's what I want to be"
Dream big and work hard little man! If you really need to be a Goalie, I'll still watch, but I may need more wine.
